Katie joined Venner Shipley in 1999 having started her career in another London firm of patent attorneys. She is a European patent attorney and specialises in the filing and prosecution of patent applications relating to biotechnology.
Katie has particular experience in prosecuting applications in the fields of pharmaceutical compositions, biological assays and molecular genetics, especially in connection with the diagnosis and treatment of cancer. She also works in a variety of other fields including materials science and liquid crystal technology. Katie also has experience of procuring and advising on supplementary protection certificates in the UK and in other countries.

Education
Katie is an honours graduate in Molecular Biology from the University of Portsmouth and obtained a PhD in Molecular Genetics from the MRC's National Institute for Medical Research. Her doctoral thesis involved developing and using advanced cloning techniques, gene mapping, protein expression and transgenic work. Katie has also worked in laboratories in Germany and the UK specialising in high-resolution physical mapping and physical techniques. Her postdoctoral research involved the mapping and identification of disease genes with a view to clinical diagnosis.
