John is a Chartered and European patent attorney. His technical background is in physics and he works in the main with clients specializing in high-tech areas relating directly to that subject. He has particular experience of patent matters in the fields of telecommunications, consumer electronics, computer memory, control systems, power supply and machine-implemented recognition systems.
John has also worked with clients in the aerospace and manufacturing industries. He enjoys the diversity of these areas and has a continuing interest in engineering following on from placements which he undertook in the automotive industry before entering the IP profession.
In addition to electronics and engineering patents, John has developed sound knowledge of consumer product IP and is well placed to advise clients in relation to the various routes for protecting new product ideas. This may involve seeking UK or Community Registered design protection, a process of which John has experience.
John’s principal aim is to work closely with his clients so that he fully understands not only the technical aspects of inventions but also the inventions’ potential commercial implementations. This helps him to prepare and prosecute patent applications in the manner which brings maximum benefit to each client.
He keeps himself informed of the latest developments in case law and patent office guidance relating to the patentability of computer software so that he can continue to prepare patent applications for software inventions in the most effective manner.
John is also happy to assist clients on contentious issues relating to patent infringement and validity.
