David joined Venner Shipley in 2007 and he is a part-qualified patent attorney. His work relates to various high technologies including mobile telecommunications and consumer electronics. For example, he has worked on cases relating to mobile handsets, cellular and wireless networks, global positioning systems (GPS), printable electronics, as well as cutting-edge nanotechnology devices. He also has experience of computer software and business method patents.
David has advised on patentability, drafted patent specifications and prosecuted British, European and US patent applications. He also has experience of international registration of industrial designs. He has worked with and understands the varying needs of a variety of clients ranging from start-up companies and university research groups through to multinational companies.
Before joining the firm, David worked as an experimental physicist at universities in the UK, Europe and North America, including a period at a leading manufacturer of research instrumentation and medical imaging systems. He also worked as part of the R&D effort related to the international fusion reactor, investigating the properties of the component superconducting magnets at cryogenic temperatures. More recently, he worked on the development of nano electronic devices with potential applications in quantum computing. David works to keep up-to-date with the latest developments in condensed matter physics and related technologies, and still acts as a referee for the journal Superconductor Science and Technology.

In 2000 David attended Durham University and attained an honours degree in Natural Sciences before enroling at Durham University and completing a PhD in Physics in December 2004.
