A Word From The Editor

It has been a busy six months since our last newsletter!

We were proud to welcome Alison Brimelow, the President of the European Patent Office, as speaker at our evening reception in the historic Fitzwilliam Museum in Cambridge in October. Please see our report contained in this edition. You can read the text of the President’s speech here on our website.

The very end of 2008 brought us the important European Patent Office Board of Appeal decision of G2/06. The consequence of the decision is that any invention concerning embryonic stem cells which involves the destruction of a human embryo is excluded from patentability by the EPC. I am sure that you will find the article on page 16 interesting even if (like me) you are not an expert in this area of technology. There is a more in-depth discussion of the decision in the news section on our website.

Although we do not have all the solutions to the current economic situation, Siân Gill’s article on page 19 may help you ensure that you are doing the right thing with your IP.
